Welcome to the Humboldt Breast Medicine Project website.
The Humboldt Breast Medicine Project consists of clinical guidelines for breast health and disease, continuously updated based on developments in the field and on feedback from its users. It is the result of a collaboration between Julie Ohnemus, M.D., family practice, and M. Ellen Mahoney, M.D., breast surgeon, who pooled over 25 years of clinical experience to generate these guidelines. We didn't do it alone though. We had tremendous support from members of our local medical community who helped us with brainstorming and refining these modules.

Special thanks to Abe Pera, D.O. who helped us with radiology, to the Humboldt-Del Norte Independent Practice Association, to the California Healthcare Foundation, and to the Humboldt Community Breast Health Project. Without them, this project would not have succeeded. We have given you the benefit of over 30 years of combined clinical experience, bearing in mind at all times during the development and writing of this content that what appears to be a benign or indeterminate breast problem could be an unusual manifestation of breast cancer. We have improved it as we have started to use it ourselves, and we rely on your input regarding what worked and what didn’t fulfill your needs in order to continue to improve and expand it. Please adhere to the algorithms strictly, but also feel free to send us feedback and to ask questions using the email link on each page. You are also invited to just call us if you cannot wait for an email response to a situation you feel may not fit the algorithms, and to just contact us to discuss a case even if you are fairly sure it fits an algorithm. While we hope to support you closely during this beta-testing period and beyond, there is no substitute for common sense and caution, and when in doubt, a short period of clinical follow-up with a definite date and time for the next appointment is the best protection for you and the patient. This material is designed to be used by the clinician and patient reviewing it together, and not by the patient in an unguided manner. It is OK to let the patient review it alone first, but do not give out the login information.
